Today, I'll keep going with carnival. In Luxembourg, "Fuesent" is the word for "carnival".
Aujourd'hui, je vais continuer sur le sujet du carnaval. Au Luxembourg, "Fuesent" est le mot utilisé pour "carnaval".


Fuesent lasts for 5 weeks, beginning on February 2nd, with Candlemas, until March 8th, with Ash Wednesday (Aschermëttwoch, in Luxemburguish). During that period, masquerade ball, carnival corteges or "cavalcades" are organized.
Fuesent dure 5 semaines, en commençant le 2 février, avec la Chandeleur, jusqu'au 8 mars, avec le mercredi des Cendres (Aschermëttwoch, en Luxembourgeois). Durant cette période, des bals masqués,des processions de carnaval ou "cavalacades" sont organisés.


Carnival's Sunday or "Fuessonnden" (this Sunday, February 14th, 2010) and Carnival's Monday or "Fuesméinden" (this Monday, February 15th, 2010) are the peak of Fuesent.
Le Dimanche de carnaval ou "Fuessonnden" (ce dimanche, 14 février 2010) et le Lundi de carnaval ou "Fuesméinden" (ce lundi, 15 février 2010) sont les points culminants de Fuesant.

During Fuesent, be sure to taste to typical Luxembourg carnival delicacies, such as Verwurrelt Gedanken ("brulled thoughts"?), pastry's knot with scaterred icing sugar, Nonnefäscht ("nun's fart"?), doughnut with scaterred icing sugar, Täertelcher (doughnut), Maisercher (doughnut mouse-shaped-like), Stretzegebäck (biscuit made out of a boiled pastry which is then cooked).
Pendant Fuesent, soyez sûrs de goûter aux spécialités luxembourgeoises de carnaval, tels que : "Verwurrelt Gedanken" (pensées brouillées), nœuds de pâte saupoudrés de sucre glace, "Nonnefäscht" (pets de nonne), beignets saupoudrés de sucre glacé, "Täertelcher" (beignets), "Maisercher" (beignets en forme de souris), "Stretzegebäck" (petits gâteaux de pâte échaudée, puis passés au four).

Mid-March, on the week-end after Fuesent time, there is the Lent fire or "Buergbrennen" (derived from the Latin word "comburere", i.e., "to burn"). Then, people celebrate "Buergbrennen" by setting fire to a big wooden-made cross, symbolising the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. There is a very similar celebration in Sweden, called "Walpurgis" (or "Valborg" in Swedish), but taking place at the end of April!
A la mi-mars, durant le week-end suivant Fuesent, il y a "Buergbrennen" (mot dérivant de latin "comburer", i.e., "brûler"). A ce moment, les gens célèbrent "Buerbrennen" en brûlant une grande croix de bois symbolisant la fin de l'hiver et le début du printemps). Il y a une fête similaire en Suède, appelée "Walpurgis" (ou "Valborg" en suédois), mais celle-ci a lieu fin avril!
