Gëlle Fra / la Femme Dorée / the Golden Lady of Luxembourg

The Gëlle Fra, or the "Golden Lady" in Luxembourgish, was designed by Claus Cito, unveiled in May 1923, and is the most famous statute of the Grand Duchy. Carried by an obelisk of 21 meters, the ensemble forms the memorial initially dedicated to the memory of Luxembourgish soldiers killed during the First World War, and then to those fallen during the Second World War and the Korea War.
La Gëlle Fra, ou la "Femme Dorée" en luxembourgeois, a été conçue par Claus Cito, inaugurée en mai 1923, et est la plus célèbre statue du Grand-Duché. Supportée par un obélisque de 21 mètres, l'ensemble forme le mémorial initialement dédié aux soldats luxembourgeois tués durant la Première Guerre Mondiale, puis à ceux tombés lors de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale et la Guerre de Corée.


During the nazi military control, the statute was removed and the pedestral destroyed. After the Second World War, the statute is showed one last time to public in 1955 and then disappeared until 1981 where she is found under benches of the Josy-Barthel stadium. She is then raised again on her obelisk and the inauguration of the restored memorial happended in June 1985.
Pendant l'occupation nazie, la statue a été retirée et le socle détruit. Après la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, la statue est montrée une dernière fois au public en 1955 puis disparut jusqu'en 1981 où elle est retrouvée sous les gradins du stade Josy-Barthel. Elle est alors remontée sur son obélisque et l'inauguration du monument restauré a lieu en juin 1985.

Today, the Gëlle Fra is at the core of a controversy. The Grand Duchy is going to send "her" to the universal exhibition, in Shanghai, where she will stay for 6 months. The Gëlle Fra should be back in Luxembourg in November 2010. The whole question is why sendinf the real one and not a replica?
Aujourd'hui, la Gëlle Fra est au cœur d'une polémique. Le Grand-Duché va l'envoyer à l'exposition universelle, à Shanghai, où "elle" restera pour 6 mois. La Gëlle Fra devrait être de retour à Luxembourg en novembre 2010. Toute la question est de savoir pourquoi envoyer l'originale et pas une réplique ?
