Oktavsmäertchen

Oktavsmäertchen (e.g., "Oktav's market") is linked to Oktav's fest. What is such a fest? Well, during the Oktav's fest (e.g., from the 4th Sunday of Easter to the 6th Sunday of Easter), some people from the Grand Duchy (and sometimes from the other immediately surrending areas) make a pilgrimage to Luxembourg City, in the honor of Mary, the Christ mother. Mary having been chosen as protector of Luxembourg City since 1666 and as patron saint of the Grand Duchy since 1978.
L' Oktavsmäertchen (i.e., le "marché de l'Octave") est lié à la fête de l'Octave. Qu'est-ce que cette fête ? Eh bien, durant la fête de l'Octave (i.e., du 4ème dimanche de Pâques jusqu'au 5ème dimanche de Pâques), certaines personnes du Grand-Duché (et parfois des communes immédiatement environnantes) partent en pèlerinage vers Luxembourg-ville, en l'honneur de Marie, la mère du Christ. Marie ayant été choisie comme protectrice de la ville de Luxembourg depuis 1666 et sainte patronne du Grand-Duché depuis 1878.


Originally, at the Oktavsmäertchen, pilgrims came to find food after their privations, and buy a small souvenir.
A l'origine, à l' Oktavsmäertchen, les pèlerins venaient se restaurer après leurs privations, et acheter un petit souvenir.



Nowadays, the Oktavsmäertchen remains with numerous chip-shops. On the w.e. of the May 8th, 2010, religious processions will take place in Luxembourg-City: they will close the Oktav fest.
De nos jours, l'Oktavsmäertchen demeure, avec ses nombreuses friteries. Le w.e. du 8 mai 2010, des processions religieuses auront lieu: elles finaliseront la fête de l'Octave.

***Why the word "Octave"? It comes from latine word "octavius" meaning "eighth". Space of 8 days devoted, in the Roman Church, to the celebration of a big fest.
Pourquoi le mot "Octave" ? Prenant ses racines avec le mot latin "octavius" signifiant "huitième". Espace de 8 jours dédié, dans l'Eglise Romaine, à la célébration d'une grande fête.
